1. Description of Industry Characteristics
Because of its abundance of tribal culture and due to its location where the hills and the ocean meet, people in Sandimen have had contact with non-aborigines for along time. However, due to the same reason, quite a lot of the traditional cultural features have disappeared. As such, with the efforts of local artists and the government's endeavors to promote cultural industries of aborigines, the redevelopment of the craft industry of Sandimen was successful.
Lately Sandimen has endeavored to win the resources and assistance of all levels of government under the development direction of ˇ§Cultural Town Buildingˇ¨. The town was able to develop its local crafts centering on the main theme of the ˇ§Three Jewels of Paiwanˇ¨, forging Sandimen into a town of art. In addition, the town will market its crafts both domestically and abroad to drive the development of local businesses.
2. Origins of the Guidance Project
Sandimen is a mountain village vested with fine crafts and awesome natural surroundings. Mt. Dawu provided the two tribes (Paiwan and Rukai) with a natural defense and allowed the town to nurture the abundant aboriginal culture. Indigenous peoples have been living here for generations and have very high artistic temperament; they have been able to utilize such talent in the operation of cultural businesses. They not only work hard but also insist on the culture and the quintessence of knowledge handed down by their ancestors. In order to preserve and promote such precious humanistic assets, cooperatives are jointly formed through the Sandimen craft industry guidance project and integration of various industry resources, allowing the integration of tribal resources. Due to the concurrent launch of the cultural, business and community reconstruction mechanisms, the production techniques of the local workshops have been increased, the production energy has been strengthened and diversified product development has been achieved so as to enhance local business capability and meet the objective of the creation of unique local crafts.
