The Papua New Guinea National Museum and Art Gallery was established in 1954 following an ¡¥Act of 1913¡¦ to protect indigenous cultural heritage of Papua New Guinea. The museum is owned by the people of PNG and to date has well over 30, 000 Anthropological Collections, more than 25 000 Archaeological Collections, 18, 061 Natural Science Collections 20, 000 plus war relics and approximately 7,000 Contemporary Art Collections.

The JK McCarthy museum is off to the side of the Goroka airstrip, a lengthy walk from town. The museum has some WWII relics, including a P-39. The museum is named after an early Australian bushmen.
